HE NEVER BLAMED THE BOOZE
[ By G. A. Finn]

His head was always aching, or rather so he said.
He thought he had neuritis, for he suffered with the head.
His breathing was erratic and his system out of gear.
He used to blame the weather but he never blamed the beer.
His liver was inactive and his food would not digest.
He swore he would change his scenery and quit the wild wet west.
He didn’t believe in doctors dope, of drugs from chemists shops.
He only blamed the weather but he never blamed the hops.

He said he would seek the mainland shore where the skies azure blue
And sign on as a station hand and learn to jackaroo
For he did not like the smelters for the sulphur had him beat.
He was not keen on mining, for he suffered with cold feet.
He would not work on surface jobs or so he told the muse.
He blamed the wind and weather but he never blamed the booze.

He left the field one morning, we shook hands at the train.
He had two hip flasks in his coat and he hoped we’d meet again.
Three months later came a letter signed, “Yours merrily old pard”.
He was on a station west of Wagga mustering sheep and living hard.
He was 90 miles from pubs and shanties feeling well and in the pink
But strange he always blamed our climate but he never blamed the drink.

MACQUARIE HARBOUR

A resident of Queenstown, with a speciality for figures - not one of the class who maintain that, “A nought don’t matter” - has figured out the quantity of water that passed out of Hell’s Gates, Macquarie Harbour on Wednesday last (18.09.1912) in 24 hours. He has estimated 389,624,400,000 gallons or 1,771,020,000 tons. [Z&DH]

Of all the one hundred thousand useless words in the English language, most of them can be heard at Committee Meetings.

A champion is one, who gets up when he can’t. (Jack Dempsey)
